On Sunday a new executive order has been issued by The President Donald Trump. In order to, rename the ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to the ‘Gulf of America’. He also declared February 9 as “Gulf of America Day”. According to a statement from the White House. The president took this decision because, the area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation. And also has remained an indelible part of America.
The executive order illustrates the newly named Gulf as including the “US Continental Shelf area bounded to the northeast, north, and northwest by Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, extending to the maritime boundary with Mexico and Cuba”. The water body now known as the Gulf of America. It was historically used to refer as the “Mexican Bay”( Seno Mexicano ) until the early 19th century. According to historical records the current name, Gulf of Mexico,” originated from Spanish travellers. Actually they named it on the behalf of Mexico’s extensive coastline.
The executive order 14172, titled ‘Restoring Names That Honor America Greatness, ‘ directs the US Secretary of the Interior to formalize the name change within 30 days. Trump also mention about significance of the renaming. He added that the region played a prominent role in America’s growth and economic growth.
